Google Chrome Operating System

July 9th, 2009 by Carl | Filed under Google.

Following the success of the Google Chrome browser,  yesterday Google announced that are developing their own operating system called Google Chrome to take advantage of their application that are already being used on the web. The new operating system is intended to be small and fast loading which would be an obvious advantage on Netbooks which are primarily used for working online.

This OS  will be Open Source and so will be free to use.  It will run on x86 and ARM processors. It will also have a simple architecture, the operating system will run in a new windowing  system on top of a  Linux core.

The trend is that computers  are becoming cheaper,  more mobile and always online. Microsoft must be quite worried at the prospect of the Google giant taking over there traditional territory especially as their software products are seen as bloated, expensive, lacking invovation and  increasingly more memory intensive.

This looks like being welcome news for users and I am sure it will be popular if it promises all that has been said  but I think we should also be cautious as it increases the risk of being locked into a Google information network.
