Who to Follow on the Twitter Network

For your Twitter network to be an effective tool you want to follow people that are going to provide value. Following hundreds of people can become distracting and time wasting. How do you choose who to follow on Twitter? Perhaps you have followed your  friends and work colleagues, people you know in your industry, some famous people just for a laugh, followed people because they followed you or based on what their avatar looks like. After this, most people would probably choose their Twitter followers randomly.

Alternatively, you could look at intersection of the set of followers of a number of different tweeple.  If the tweeps you know are following the same person it is an indicator that they are worth following. This  simple set theory is implemented in a Twitter application: who-follows-who. As an example, let’s see who I have in common with dazzlindonna from SEOScoop.

who-follows-who

The left side of the screen shows the people that are our common followers, while on the right we can see the people that we are both following. I am showing an example with myself and I know who I am following and who is following me, but this is just for illustration.  It could be used to find other SEO people worth following given two or more major players in the industry.

It works with up-to five different Twitter usernames but obviously the number of common people among five is likely to be the empty set in many cases especially if comparing people in different fields.
